The First Verb

The Holy Spirit animates
all, moves
all, roots
all, forgives
all, cleanses
all, erases
all
our past mistakes, and then
puts medicine on our wounds.
We praise the Spirit of incandescence
for awakening
and reawakening
all
creation.

~~Hildegard of Bingen

Butcher, Carmen Acevedo. Hildegard of Bingen. Brewster, Massachusetts: Paraclete Press, 2007. 36.

I just learned of Carmen Acevedo Butcher through my daughter AE a few days ago. The two of them co-edited one of the Fulbright Reviews in Korea about five years ago. She is an author and a professor. Of course, I had to buy some of her books when I learned about her. One of them is a new Lenten devotional: Following Christ: A Lenten Reader to Stretch Your Soul.

Beautiful. I've got a book sitting on my shelf about von Bingen. I'd gotten a recording of her music, but didn't know much else. ;) I'll have to check on Butcher now too.
